Our Challenges:
As accomplished women in medicine, you’ve undoubtedly scaled remarkable heights.
Yet, you find yourself grappling with:
- Loss of agency and satisfaction in our work.
- Navigating the increasing demands and red tape of the healthcare system that does not consider your personal need to have a life outside of medicine.
- Not having enough time to actually help and connect with your patients.
- Facing increasing stress and moral injury as you cannot offer patients what they truly need.
- Lack of physical and mental well-being.
- Lack of your own self-care.
- Feeling disconnected from personal values and joy.
- Burnout, anxiety, depression, disconnection, and even guilt.
- Balancing work and personal life.
- Feeling undervalued and overworked.
- Wondering if you should stay in medicine or try something else.
- Wanting and yet afraid to make changes, you worked so hard for this career… and here you are so dissatisfied.
Dr. Olson understands these struggles and found her own path to well-being through Mind Body Medicine.
I know these feelings all too well. I felt physically ill, I was so dissatisfied. My soul was distressed by how my agency as a physician and my patient care capacities felt narrow and constricted by the limitations of our conventional training, our medical system and insurance companies. I nearly left my medical career and considered art school. It was then in 1997, that I discovered Mind Body Medicine training and Ayurveda with Dr. Deepak Chopra. After this training and embodying the skills, my self-identity as a physician and a woman in medicine expanded. I learned that I could offer holistic patient-centered solutions beyond my conventional training. I learned it was possible to prevent and reverse diseases through lifestyle and nutrition changes and self care practices. I also understood that the mind body and spirit are inter-related, not separate entities, and their alignment or lack there of impacts health outcomes and wellbeing. Embodying these principles and practices, I could bring satisfaction to my patients through expression of my own wellbeing. It was then that I made the life changing decision to practice medicine on my own terms. By integrating Mindfulness training and Mind Body Medicine with Endocrinology, I transformed my own wellbeing and the health outcome of my patients for the better. My love of medicine returned. I believe that if we have well-being as healers, by learning the skills to rebalance and renew ourselves and our offerings, we can bring more abundance to our work and those we care for. My husband Dr. Eric Olson, an orthopaedic surgeon, also trained with me in Mind Body medicine and has brought a different level of satisfaction to his work and patients. We are now ready to share these gifts with you, our colleagues. It’s time to counteract burnout and bring back joy to medicine.
